As NIQS President – Major Achievements:
I was President of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) between 2011-2013. My main achievement was gaining recognition for Quantity Surveyors as the most relevant professionals for construction economics and construction cost jobs (especially on big budget government procurement that are prone to cost inflation). I achieved this by deploying leadership, influencing and coalition-building skills. I first commissioned and led the elaboration of the “NIQS Development Strategy”. This resulted in a higher public cum media profile for the institute and closer relationship with Federal executive, regulatory and legislative agencies who had hitherto not properly understood the roles of Quantity Surveyors in the economy. As a result, the NIQS is now frequently invited to make inputs into legislation and policy on construction, procurement and relevant issues. Our members are also courted for comments on these issues.
I built the foundation for the success by first convincing the NIQS membership on the need for a new Constitution which promoted transparency, accountability and national inclusivity, thus engaged membership and organisational coherence. This foundational exercise tasked my negotiation and coalition-building skills.
As NIQS President, I organised a major conference on Infrastructure PPPs in Nigeria (attracting over 640 delegates with very senior representation from Federal Government infrastructure-related agencies). I also established the NIQS EagleHeart Charity, modelled after the RICS LionHeart, to support hard up members.
I have the following International Major Awards:
